UCLA’s Lewis set for next Discovery Lecture

Roger Lewis, MD, PhD, a national expert on methods that can improve the flexibility and efficiency of clinical trials, will deliver the next Flexner Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018.

Lewis chairs the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a senior medical scientist for Berry Consultants, which provides innovative clinical trial design, analysis and implementation.

His lecture, entitled “Bayesian Adaptive Platform Clinical Trials: A Research Paradigm,” will begin at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall. It is sponsored by the Center for Quantitative Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Bayesian statistical methods and adaptive design allow clinical trials to be modified after they have begun without undermining their validity or integrity. A platform trial allows multiple treatments to be evaluated simultaneously.

A member of the National Academy of Medicine, Lewis received his PhD in Biophysics and MD from Stanford University. He is a fellow of American College of Emergency Physicians and has received its Award for Outstanding Contributions in Research.

Lewis participates in the design and analysis of laboratory, clinical and health services research. Other areas of interest include emergency department crowding and disaster preparedness, the role and function of data monitoring committees and difficulties surrounding informed consent in emergency research.
