COVID-19 boosters required for all employees. Deadline is Feb. 14.Jan. 18, 0202, 3:36 PM
Based on CDC recommendations, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) for several months has strongly urged employees to get a COVID-19 booster vaccination, if they are eligible to receive one.
Given the exponential spread of the omicron variant, and the evidence that boosted individuals are more protected against infection with this strain, VUMC will now require all employees eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster vaccination to do so by Feb. 14, 2022, unless they have an approved exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement. This is a two-week extension of the original deadline.
Employees not yet eligible for the booster will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine booster within 30 days after becoming eligible, unless they have an approved exemption.
COVID-19 booster vaccinations are now proven effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19, including disease caused by both the omicron and delta variants.
VUMC’s new booster requirement is an important step to protect all patients, families and employees from severe COVID-19 infection and the spread of the COVID-19 virus to those in our environment who are not protected by vaccination (such as those with suppressed immune systems).
Employees who have not already received a COVID-19 booster vaccination are eligible:
- 5 months after receiving their primary series of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine
- 2 months after their initial J&J/Janssen vaccine.
Recall that for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the primary vaccine series is usually 2 doses of vaccine but may be 3 doses if you have a condition or take medications that suppress your immune system.
Accessing COVID-19 vaccines:
Please visit https://www.vumc.org/health-wellness/covid-19/vumc-employee-covid-19-vaccine-information under “I want to get the COVID-19 vaccine. What locations can I visit?” for a list of options (on-campus and off) for obtaining your COVID-19 booster.
If you have questions or need additional information about VUMC’s policy on COVID booster doses, please speak to your manager. For questions regarding the vaccine or options for vaccination, contact the VUMC Occupational Health Clinic at 615-936-0955.
VUMC is not currently requiring employees to provide proof they have received a booster. However, employees may voluntarily submit proof of the booster. If CMS adopts a rule requiring COVID-19 booster vaccinations for all employees of organizations that participate in the Medicare program, VUMC will require proof of booster vaccination as a condition of continued employment at VUMC for all employees unless they have received an approved exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
Employees who wish to request an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement and/or COVID-19 booster requirement may find information on how to do so at the Vaccine Information Page.
