VUMC doctors perform first robotic surgery
May. 28, 2003—Vanderbilt's first robotic surgical procedure was performed in mid May by Dr. Joseph A. Smith Jr., William L. Bray Professor and Chair of Urologic Surgery. Smith used VUMC's new $1 million-plus Da Vinci Surgical System, built by Intuitive Surgical, to perform a radical prostatectomy.
Vanderbilt, Meharry establish new Center for AIDS Research
May. 27, 2003—Vanderbilt and Meharry have been collaborating with NIH for several years on research involving HIV/AIDS, which is spread primarily by sexual contact and intravenous drug use. The goal of the new grant is to encourage further collaboration between the schools, and train new investigators to advance AIDS treatment and prevention.

Apr. 2, 2003—Current and former smokers are needed for a new study to determine if screening people with either spiral computerized tomography (CT) or chest X-ray before they have symptoms can reduce deaths from lung cancer.
