School of Nursing launches Tennessee’s first master of nursing degree to prepare registered nurses

May. 25, 2022—Vanderbilt University School of Nursing has launched a Master of Nursing (MN) degree to help meet the high demand for registered nurses in health care settings throughout the nation. The program aims to attract people looking for a career change or those with a bachelor’s degree in another field. Applications are open and will be accepted through August. The program will begin in spring 2023.

Study seeks to improve gender equity for liver transplantation waiting list

May. 25, 2022—Women who need a liver transplant are more likely to spend more time on a waiting list, become too sick for transplant or die compared to men. To improve equity, a recently published Vanderbilt-led study suggests a sex adjustment to criteria for MELD (model for end-stage liver disease), which determines allocation of transplanted livers.

Rehm first pediatrician named president-elect of Society of Hospital Medicine

May. 25, 2022—Kris Rehm, MD, MMHC, professor of Clinical Pediatrics and vice chair in the Department of Pediatrics, has been elected president-elect of the Society of Hospital Medicine and will be the first pediatrician to hold the post for the organization.

DBMI summer program for MNPS high school students resumes

May. 24, 2022—High school students in Metro Nashville Public Schools who are interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and computer science can once again get paid internship experience through a summer program within the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at Vanderbilt, thanks to initial funding from DBMI faculty member Daniel Fabbri.

Injury prevention experts highlight ABCs of water safety as summer begins

It is also when experts see an uptick in drowning and near drowning incidents. “Drowning is a silent killer,” said Purnima Unni, MPH, program manager, Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
