Roman Perri, M.D., medical director of the Liver Transplant program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been named the Tennessee Hepatologist of the Year by the American Liver Foundation(ALF).
Perri, assistant professor of Medicine, received the Award of Excellence during the recent ALF Flavors of Nashville Gala held at the Gaylord Springs Club in the Opryland Hotel complex.
Perri accepted the honor in recognition of the entire liver transplant team at Vanderbilt, he said.
“At the end of the day our goal is to provide the best possible care for the patients that we have,” he said. “We have a great team that has enabled us to take care of so many complex patients. This award is an indication of how good our team really is.”
Perri has been pleased with the continued success of the program, which was founded in 1990, as well as the increased liver transplant volumes.
During the 2012 calendar year, Vanderbilt performed a total of 98 liver transplants, while in 2013 the center recorded the highest number of liver transplantation surgeries, at 119.
More than 1,500 liver transplants have been performed at Vanderbilt since the program started.
Perri joined Vanderbilt in 2006 after completing fellowships in Transplant Medicine/Hepatology and Gastroenterology/Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1999, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt.
