John W. Brock III, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vice Chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences, Director of Pediatric Urology and Monroe Carell Jr. Professor, has been named Senior Vice President of Pediatric Surgical Services.
“Dr. Brock’s highly respected reputation among the region’s pediatric health care providers adds to our ability to offer the services of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital into new markets and establish new surgical programs,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., deputy CEO and Chief Clinical Officer for VUMC and CEO of the Vanderbilt Health System. “John’s leadership in this new role will be an important asset as we support the expansion of clinicians and hospitals served by Children’s Hospital.”
Currently, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt (MCJCHV) offers services through 19 clinic locations across Tennessee and is also supporting a growing number of hospitals and physicians through the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network (VHAN).
“For more than 30 years Dr. Brock has passionately championed Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt throughout Tennessee and the nation. Through his commitment to excellence, the Department of Pediatric Urology is consistently ranked among the very best specialty programs of any kind in the nation. Under John’s leadership as our pediatric Surgeon-in-Chief, the same can be said about the breadth of Children’s Hospital’s surgical services consistently achieving clinical and academic excellence,” said Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of VUMC and dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

During Dr. Brock’s tenure as Surgeon-in-Chief, the volumes for all surgical specialties have tripled, transparent patient quality and safety models have been developed and multiple off-site clinics have been established.
“With growing competition among pediatric health care providers locally and regionally, we have asked Dr. Brock to add to his duties as Surgeon-in-Chief and Vice Chair for the Section of Surgical Sciences this new administrative role to lead the expansion of all surgical services across Tennessee and the multi-state region we serve,” said Luke Gregory, CEO of Children’s Hospital.
Among Dr. Brock’s responsibilities will be to define the growth strategy for all pediatric surgical services.
This will help us identify new locations that will benefit from the presence of pediatric surgical services and coordinate implementation for these locations among all Vanderbilt University Medical Center departments. Currently, Children’s Hospital operates six outreach surgery clinics.
In addition to his role in the hospital’s strategic growth, Dr. Brock has been asked by Gregory and Steven Webber, MBChB, James C. Overall Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, to assume the data management and faculty coordination for the U.S. News & World Report annual survey process.
“We feel that a very focused effort for surgery and medical subspecialties will put Children’s Hospital in the Top 10 in the nation in these rankings, a critical requirement as we compete for national managed care contracts, and that John is the right individual to lead these efforts,” said Gregory. “Further, as we expand the geographic footprint of our locations we do not want to fragment our management of quality and patient safety; elements that are core to community trust and our brand.”
As the landscape for health care reimbursement and funding continues to change, Children’s Hospital is being frequently asked to support other health systems as they engage in large pediatric specialty networks. “We are seeing many of our traditional referral patterns changing and new opportunities appearing,” said Gregory.

Dr. Brock received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He underwent residency training at VUMC where he served as chief resident in Urology.
The author and co-author of more than 220 scholarly publications and book chapters, Dr. Brock has been an invited presenter at nearly 300 gatherings. He has served as Surgeon-in-Chief for Children’s Hospital and as Vice Chair for the Section of Surgical Sciences since 2002.
Complementing his leadership role within Children’s Hospital and VUMC, Dr. Brock is a visible presence in the community, frequently representing the hospital among individuals, groups and organizations that philanthropically support its missions.
