Discovery Lecture to feature disparities expert
Shiriki Kumanyika, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of Epidemiology and associate dean for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Kumanyika will discuss “Research to Eliminate Ethnic Disparities in Obesity: Strategic Directions,” at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.
A member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Kumanyika has directed several randomized clinical and observational studies of diet, obesity, weight control and chronic disease risk. Her current studies involve developing and evaluating interventions to prevent or treat obesity and promote healthy eating and physical activity in African-Americans and Latinos, in clinical and community-based settings.
Kumanyika has served on the IOM Food and Nutrition Board and has chaired World Health Organization panels on global nutrition and obesity issues.
