“Gunning for Membrane Proteins: A Symposium in Memory of Anne Karpay” will be held next week.
Ms. Karpay was a Ph.D. candidate in Biochemistry who died in early 2008 at age 26 after a four-year struggle with breast cancer.
“Anne was an outstanding young scholar who worked at the frontier of membrane protein structural biology,” said her graduate school mentor, Charles “Chuck” Sanders II, Ph.D., professor of Biochemistry.
The memorial symposium will be held Friday, Jan. 23, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. in 1220 MRB III. Speakers are renowned scientists who study membrane protein structure:
• James Bowie, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles
• Douglas Rees, Ph.D., a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator in the Division of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology
• Stanley Opella, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego
The event is being co-sponsored by the Center for Structural Biology, the Department of Biochemistry and the BRET Office.
