Johnston to head new pharmacy program
Philip Johnston, Pharm.D., a senior pharmacist and assistant director for Education and Research for Vanderbilt's Department of Pharmaceutical Services, is leaving to become dean of Belmont University's newly created pharmacy program.
The first classes of the new program at Belmont will begin in fall of 2008. It joins the school's nursing, social work, physical therapy and occupational therapy programs as part of the Gordon E. Inman College of Health Sciences and Nursing.
Johnston has been associated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for 23 years and also serves as director of the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, lecturer at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and as associate professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.
“There has been no better place to learn than Vanderbilt,” Johnston said.
“So many of the Vanderbilt 'family' have been mentors, partners and supporters during my career here, working to assure high quality and substantial growth in health care innovation. Going to Belmont is really not a goodbye, but a new chapter.
“Students in the Belmont School of Pharmacy will eventually learn from Vanderbilt staff, as part of their experiential curriculum,” he said.
“We also expect to collaborate in classroom experiences and in research once we are established, making the Nashville area an even greater attraction for pharmacy students and practitioners,” Johnston said.
