Robert Churchwell, Nashville journalist and father of Vanderbilt faculty members Drs. Andre, Keith, and Kevin Churchwell, spoke Tuesday as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture Series, sponsored by the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Churchwell described his career as a journalist for 31 years, beginning in 1950, at the Nashville Banner as the first African-American to work permanently on the staff of a southern white daily paper.
