The Institute of Medicine is accepting nominations for the 16th annual Gustav O. Lienhard Award. The award, a medal and $25,000, recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in improving health care services in the United States. Support for the award is provided by an endowment established by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Lienard was chairman of the Robert Wood Johnson’s Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1986. Prior to that, he had a distinguished career with Johnson & Johnson, where he began in 1932 as an accountant and retired 39 years later as president and chairman of the Executive Committee.
The Institute of Medicine was chartered in 1970 as a component of the National Academy of Sciences. The Institute’s charter calls on it to enlist outstanding members of the medical and other professions in the examination of policy matters the affect the health of the public.
Nomination materials should include a letter of no more than five pages explaining how the individual has made a sustained, national contribution to the improvement of personal health; a one-sentence citation summarizing the nominee’s overall accomplishments or specific achievements; and a curriculum vitae with a selected bibliography of up to 15 entries.
Nominations must be postmarked by May 18, 2001 and should be submitted to: Marion Ein Lewin, The Leinhard Award Committee, Institute of Medicine (FO-2030), 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20418. For more information, call (202) 334-1506 or hppf@nas.edu.
A panel of experts in various aspects of health care, convened by the Institute of Medicine, will review all nominations and make recommendations regarding the award. The panel’s recommendations will be acted on by the Institute’s governing council and president. The award will be presented at the IOM annual meeting in October.
