The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center will present a free seminar, “Prostate Cancer: The Latest in Detection, Treatment and Prevention,” on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the 8th floor conference center at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, corner of Pierce and 23rd Avenues. (Due to construction of the new Children’s Hospital, you must enter Pierce from 24th Avenue. Parking will be available in the Capers Garage at the corner of Pierce and 24th.)
Speakers will be Dr. Michael Cookson, assistant professor of Urologic Surgery, and clinical dietician Barbara Joines. Topics will include the latest in treatment approaches, screening recommendations and various factors that may help prevent prostate cancer, including diet.
Cookson will also discuss SELECT, a recently launched nationwide study testing whether selenium and vitamin E can protect men from prostate cancer, the most common cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death among men.
This year, prostate cancer will be diagnosed in more than 198,000 men, and an estimated 31,500 men will die from the disease.
