Stroke symposium
The second annual Vanderbilt Stroke Symposium will be held on Sept. 9 at the Vanderbilt Stadium Club from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This year's event, titled "Beyond TPA: Breakthroughs on Stroke Treatment," is sponsored by the Department of Neurology and the Division of Continuing Medical Education.
Keynote speakers will be Dr. Anthony Furlan, one of the world's foremost experts in the treatment and prevention of stroke, and Dr. Howard Kirshner, vice-chair of the Department of Neurology and director of Neurology at Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital.

Shot time
Vanderbilt's Occupational Health Clinic is once again offering the influenza vaccine and TB skin testing program during the months of October, November and December.
The influenza vaccine will be available at VOHC (640 Medical Arts Building) beginning Oct. 4. There is no charge and no appointments are necessary.

Achievement award
Dr. Noel B. Tulipan, associate professor of Neurological Surgery, has received the 1999 Spina Bifida Association of America Health Care Achievement Award.
The award was presented to Tulipan in June at the association’s annual conference for members and health care professionals.
Tulipan received the award based upon his contributions relating to the treatment of spina bifida.
“Aside from the medical knowledge gained, your efforts have brought much needed focus from the medical community and the media to this devastating birth defect,” said Dick Thayer, chairman of the board of directors of the SBA.
Tulipan and Dr. Joseph P. Bruner, assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, have been pioneers in fetal surgery, including an inutero procedure to repair spina bifida.
