Chapman honored with lectureship
Dr. John E. Chapman, dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, has been honored with a lectureship established in his name.
The newly created Dr. John E. Chapman Lectureship on the Ecology of Medicine and Medical Education, established in memory of Dr. Richard E. Strain Sr., will be held each year and will focus on a wide variety of medical issues.
The lectureship was established by Dr. Richard E. Strain Jr., who graduated from VUSM in 1975.
"Dr. Strain expressed interest in a wide latitude of multi-faceted studies in medicine, medical education, and medicine in society," said Chapman. "Such an action as forming this lectureship is entirely consistent with his days at Vanderbilt Medical School. We are very grateful."
The yearly lecture will be devoted to subjects that address the changing role of medicine in our culture.
The younger Strain ‹ now a physician in the Division of Orthopaedics at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla. ‹ provided the funding for the establishment of the lectureship and devoted it to the memory of his father, Dr. Richard E. Strain Sr.
"I wanted to do something for the two men who have meant the most to me in my life," said Strain. "The medical school is a top-down culture and Dean Chapman has led it very well."
This lectureship represents an example of how former students can express their appreciation for their studies and their environment, Strain said.
