Bruce Silverstein, MD’75 Postgraduate training in medicine and gastroenterology at the University of Utah and University of Washington. Full-time faculty professor at the University of Washington where he helps run the medical school curriculum. Started photography in college and medical school, often shooting for national magazines and NBC; assignments paid his medical school tuition. Ran a film/video production company for 35 years. Favorite places to travel are the Arctic and Antarctic — polar bears and penguins are favorite animals. Enjoys Africa, especially Namibia and the big cats.
“I often get asked why I photograph wildlife. My answer is simple: It teaches me a lot about myself and the world around me. Watching the interaction between a mother with its newborn is as pure as love gets. Understanding behavior within herds, troops, packs and prides explains a lot about human relationships. Just being out in nature with wildlife allows me to reflect and relax. Much of photography is observation. Observing animals is my portal on life.”
