The Vanderbilt Ophthalmic Imaging Center was unveiled Wednesday at the Tennessee Economic Development Center in downtown Nashville. Dr. Tunde Sotunde, with United Healthcare, has his eyes screened for diabetic retinopathy by the Center's director, Larry Merin. Vanderbilt’s Dr. Harry R. Jacobson, vice chancellor for Health Affairs, Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, dean of the School of Medicine, and Dr. Denis M. O’Day, George Weeks Hale Professor of Ophthalmology and chair of the department, were onhand to celebrate the event. The Center combines digital retina cameras with BellSouth's DSL network to provide screenings to remote clinics. United Healthcare will be the first insurer to pay for the screenings.
