Free skin cancer screening May 21

Free skin cancer screenings will be offered at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks May 21 in conjunction with Skin Cancer Awareness month.

More than 115,000 new cases of melanoma were estimated in 2010, with deaths totaling 8,700.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Vanderbilt University Medical Center and community dermatologists will host their annual free skin cancer screening on Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to noon at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks (entrance A).

The event is sponsored by the Nashville Dermatology Society in conjunction with the American Academy of Dermatology, and hosted by Vanderbilt.

In 2010, more than 150 patients were screened at the dermatology clinic at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks. Community skin cancer screenings are typically held annually, to coincide with the time of the year when people are more likely to be outdoors.
