Gregory Mencio, M.D., director of Pediatric Orthopaedics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, was recently honored for his long-term dedication to military families at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Blanchfield Army Community Hospital (BACH) and Fort Campbell recognized Mencio with the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. For 23 years, Mencio served as a physician consultant in pediatric orthopaedics, traveling monthly to care for children and adolescents as well as to provide training and guidance to BACH hospital staff.

“By establishing and staffing a monthly clinic at BACH, Dr. Mencio provided a mechanism to identify and care for children and adolescents with orthopaedic needs not typically available at the community hospital level,” said Quentin Humberd, M.D., chief of the Exceptional Family Member Program at BACH.

“He developed referral mechanisms that allowed seamless care for patients who required specialty care in orthopaedics at Vanderbilt, and was always available to his patients, families and our staff when needed. Dr. Mencio is commended for his skill, his initiative and his demonstrated leadership in the provision of pediatric orthopaedic care.”

Humberd presented Mencio the award at BACH on Jan. 27.

“It has been a privilege to have been able to help the kids and families of those who serve us all,” Mencio said. “I will miss my monthly trip to BACH and the staff and friends who I was fortunate to work with over the years.”
