In this role Glazer will report to C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer for VUMC.

The CHIM is responsible for ensuring the development of and adherence to practice standards related to all aspects of health information management, including privacy, documentation and coding standards. To impact these goals, the center has established a shared leadership model, which includes the position of Executive Medical Director, held by Glazer, and Chief Administrative Officer, held by Gaye Smith.

In addition to responsibilities associated with the CHIM, they will oversee VUMC’s efforts surrounding clinical documentation and coding excellence (CDACE), a Medical Center initiative that began in May 2015, which has resulted in improved methods to more concisely and precisely document the care patients receive.

Kelly Sponsler, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine, serves as the Associate Medical Director for CDACE. A team of Physician advisers support the work of CDACE within their respective clinical services. Kevin Smith, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of Clinical Medicine, will continue in his role as Associate Medical Director for CHIM, supporting Glazer in the development and deployment of policies and processes to assure accurate, effective, timely and compliant clinical documentation.

“Dr. Glazer in this new position, and expanding the scope of the CHIM, align with efforts to increase and enhance health data management throughout our hospitals and clinics as we approach the implementation of Epic. Dr. Glazer is a collaborative and facilitative colleague who will do an outstanding job in this new role,” said Pinson.

Glazer will work closely with the clinical chairs and operational leaders throughout the Vanderbilt Health System, schools and the board of the Vanderbilt Medical Group to help ensure that patient care and management processes are coordinated across the Medical Center enterprise.

Glazer’s responsibilities include collaborating with the CHIM’s Chief Administrative Officer to develop the Center’s strategy and operational standards; co-chairing the Health Record Executive Committee; representing the medical staff on matters related to the Center’s work; and collaborating with the Clinical Chairs to implement policies, and to review data on departmental performance related to Health Information Management standards for performance.

“I am very fortunate to work with physician leaders who are committed to the highest standards for comprehensive and accurate clinical documentation to support clinical care and patient safety while accurately reflecting the complexity of the care provided at VUMC. I look forward to partnering with Dr. Glazer as we carry our work forward in the design, build and implementation of Epic,” Smith said.

Glazer, who earned his medical degree at the University of Louisville and served internship, residency and fellowship at Emory University, said he is excited about the opportunity.
“I am honored to be asked to continue the work of Titus Daniels and Gaye Smith in this endeavor,” Glazer said. “These are big shoes to fill and I look forward to the challenge.”
