Suanne Daves, M.D., has been named vice chair for Pediatric Anesthesiology, a key leadership role for both the Department of Anesthesiology and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
Daves joined the Department of Anesthesiology as an associate professor in December 2008. She was then appointed chief of the Pediatric Cardiac Division in 2009, and in 2012, she was named pediatric anesthesiologist-in-chief at Children’s Hospital.
“For all the time I’ve known her at Vanderbilt, Dr. Daves has demonstrated her innate ability to lead and to achieve positive changes with both her team and the institution as a whole,” said Warren Sandberg, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.
“Under her leadership and facilitation, major improvements in perioperative care and outcomes have happened in a very collaborative and multidisciplinary way. Dr. Daves is increasingly taking on responsibility for the academic and professional development of the pediatric anesthesiology faculty, so it is very fitting that she move into this important role. And she will continue to be a great leader in the clinical, operational, policy and quality improvement arenas of the Children’s Hospital.”
Pediatric Anesthesiology includes both the Division of General Pediatric Anesthesiology and the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology.
The Division of General Pediatric Anesthesiology provides perioperative care for more than 13,000 patients a year at Children’s Hospital, the region’s major pediatric referral center. General Pediatric anesthesiologists with specialized training in pediatric pain management also provide both acute and chronic pain management services for young patients.
The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology provides intraoperative and catheterization laboratory anesthesia care for pediatric cardiac patients, in addition to participating in patients’ postoperative intensive care unit management.
“I want to congratulate Suanne in the achievement of this new role in the anesthesia department,” said John W. Brock III, M.D., Monroe Carell Jr. Chair, director of the Division of Pediatric Urology and Children’s Hospital surgeon-in-chief.
“Suanne is the consummate professional. She has embraced her leadership role in the Pediatric division in a way that enhances the environment for her colleagues. More importantly, she has continued to show her passion and commitment to the families and children we serve. I am very proud to call her my colleague and partner as we continue to try and make the perioperative services the very best they can be,” Brock said.
“Suanne is a strong advocate for quality and safety,” said Luke Gregory, chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital. “Her thoughtful approach to all issues is greatly appreciated by our faculty, staff, patients and families.”
Daves earned her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, and she completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of California, a fellowship in executive leadership in academic medicine from Drexel University College of Medicine, a fellowship in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Harvard School of Medicine, and a fellowship in Critical Care at the University of Chicago. She is board certified in critical care medicine, as well as anesthesiology.
