VUMC once again named among nation’s finest by U.S. News and World Report

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has once again been named among the nation’s finest providers of specialty care by U.S. News and World Report, and has also been named the No. 1 hospital in Tennessee and the Metro Nashville area.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has once again been named among the nation’s finest providers of specialty care by U.S. News and World Report, and has also been named the No. 1 hospital in Tennessee and the Metro Nashville area.

In the newly released 2016-17 edition of “America’s Best Hospitals,” VUMC had 12 out of a possible 16 specialties either nationally ranked or designated as nationally high performing.

In U.S. News’ “Regional Recognitions” portion of the rankings, VUMC was named the No.1 hospital in Tennessee and the Metro Nashville area for the fifth consecutive year, having topped these rankings since they were introduced in 2012.

“Our outstanding people change lives every day through their hard work and deep commitment to serve others. Again this year, I am proud of our performance in these rankings and want to express my appreciation to everyone for these results. While this acknowledgment from U.S. News reflects positively on our adult hospitals and clinics, our patients can be assured that every day our goal is to provide the very best care,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer for VUMC.

In the report released today (Tuesday, Aug. 2), the following VUMC programs were nationally ranked: Cancer (42); Cardiology and Heart Surgery (29); Diabetes and Endocrinology (42); Ear, Nose and Throat (23); Gynecology (18); Nephrology (8); Neurology and Neurosurgery (43); Pulmonology (42); and Urology (8).

High-performing specialty programs were: Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Geriatrics; and Orthopaedics.

U.S. News evaluated 4,667 hospitals across the country, and only 1,891 performed well enough to have even a single specialty program ranked as being among the best in the nation. To be eligible, hospitals must either be a teaching hospital, be affiliated with a medical school, and have at least 200 beds or at least 100 beds plus certain medical technologies.

RTI International, based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, compiled all data and produced the rankings for U.S. News. The “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings are accessible online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and the publication’s print edition is scheduled to hit newsstands later this month.

In a separate ranking released last month, U.S. News named Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt among the best children’s hospitals in the nation, with 10 of 10 pediatric specialty programs ranked.

Children’s Hospital programs ranked this year include: Cancer; Cardiology and Heart Surgery; Diabetes and Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; Nephrology; Neonatology; Neurology and Neurosurgery; Orthopaedics; Pulmonology; and Urology.
