Paul Tang, MD, MS, an expert in health information technology, will deliver the next Flexner Discovery Lecture on Thursday, April 12.
His lecture, “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence at the Point of Care,” will begin at 4 p.m. in room 208 Light Hall. It is sponsored by the Department of Biomedical Informatics.
Tang is vice president and chief health transformation officer at IBM Watson Health and a board-certified practicing internist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
At IBM Watson Health, Tang is seeking ways to use artificial intelligence to make a difference in individual health and healthcare, in particular to transform the way healthcare professionals weigh evidence and partner with individuals to improve health.
Tang has dedicated his professional career to innovative uses of health information technology, including the creation of electronic health record systems. From 2009 to 2017, he served as co-chair of the federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee, which advises the Department of Health and Human Services. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and received the American Medical Informatics Association Don E. Detmer Award for Health Policy Contributions in Informatics.
