Pets of VUMC 2019 — Collection #5: Here’s looking at you, part 1

These eyes have seen a lot of love

Amy Biagini, Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratory. “My cat Sheldon was a stray whom I let inside during the cold winter polar vortex of 2013-14. Like his namesake, he has staked a claim on his spot on the couch. When he is not on the couch, he loves posing for pictures outside, knowing he is quite photogenic.”

This is the fifth installment of photographs submitted by VUMC employees to the 2019VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest. Hundreds of pictures were submitted for the contest, and while we won’t be able to use all, or even most, of the pictures we received, we hope to showcase a good sample of the best of the beasts.

Remember, the top prize offered in the contest is a photo of your pet in VUMC Voice.

If you missed sending in an entry this year, and your pet is peeved about it, please reassure him or her that there will be a VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest next year, but explain that the deadline for entries for this year has passed, and no more pictures will be accepted. We hope your pet understands.

Julie Garcia, Pediatric Social Work. “Hawkeye is a 7-year-old pup who was found on a farm in East Tennessee. He is a great running partner and hunts for chipmunks, moles, birds, snakes, and the neighbor’s cat in his free time.”
Chad Lightner, Vanderbilt Institute of Clinical and Translational Research. “Koda, guilty of trying to nip at a fire in firepit — over and over. Koda is very sweet, gentle, and obedient.”
Reginald T. Bailey, Human Resources. “Gracie is a 7-month-old rat terrier.”
Cindy Khoury, Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society. Max.
Ann Benco, Vanderbilt Digestive Disease Center. “Charles is my four year old Persian kitty. He is the sweetest cat I have ever had. He is so cute with his silent meows.”
Meredith Watson, Otolaryngology. “Ollie is a baby veiled chameleon. She enjoys crickets, climbing, and changing colors (mostly green, darker green, and brown… we’re working on it). She gets black polka dots when she’s grumpy.”
Louise Hanson, Zerfoss Student Health Center. “Winnie was adopted from the Humane Society and was very sick with heartworms when she joined our family. She is now happy and healthy.”
Susan Meyn, Office of Research. “Our musical girl cat Lightfoot (aka Footie, Foo Foo, the Foo, etc.). We adopted her almost 17 years ago from a box of kittens left in the middle of Dragon Park. She really does enjoy music, and will sit very attentively when my husband plays our piano.”
Courtney DeClercq, Strategic Planning. Bowie (with baby Ellie). “Bowie is a 5-year-old corgi who enjoys long hikes and scaring the birds off the lawn. When he’s not outdoors he is keeping the place safe from delivery trucks, maneuvering past a toddler and making sure the kitchen floor stays food free. While he takes his jobs very seriously, at the end of a long day he loves nothing more than a good cuddle.”
Rebecca Jaroszewicz, Emergency Department. “Murphy Lee loves to play fetch, growl at everything, and most importantly, talk ALL of the time.”
Ashwini Yenamandra, Cytogenetics Lab. “Sammy is a Shitzu-Bichon mix, male, 10 years old. He wants to go for walks all the time.”
Joseph Gigante, Pediatrics. “Wink is a 7-year-old cat we adopted from an animal sanctuary when he was a 7-week-old kitten. He was one of only two kittens from a litter of seven who survived. His mother and the other five kittens died of an infection. He lost his left eye as a result of the infection at birth, and the folks who rescued him gave him his name. He is a Maine coon cat with a thick, bushy tail. He is also one of the most personable social, cats you will ever meet. He often will lay on his back and wants his belly rubbed. He acts more like a dog than a cat.”
Jonie Chavez, GI Medicine. “Meatball is the hit of his doggie day-care and graces the cover of their web-page often because he’s just so darn cute and lovable.”
Carole Hathaway, Medicine. “TedEKatz was a rescue from the Dickson Humane Society and is an immense delight. Some of his favorite past times are reading the Dickson Post, working crossword puzzles, reading Kindle Books and jigsaw puzzles. He can generally be found tormenting his brother and sister cats, Onyx and MacAllister, who incidentally are also rescues, or watching birds out the front windows.”
Beth Cooper, Human Resources. “My beagle mix Buster is 13 years old. He loves to go for walks and barking at other dogs.”
Dianne Dyce, Section of Surgical Sciences. “Samantha Jean loves sleeping and intimidating the dog, in that order.”
Dana Andersen, Operations Improvement. “Mowgli is a rescue dog that we believe is a dachshund/terrier mix.”
Jo Harris-Gammon, Health IT. “These are my kitties Bubby (the black cat) and Patches (the calico barely visible in the box). Patches thought she had won the battle to own the box until she realized that Bubby wasn’t going to let her out of it. We heard the fight and walked in on him innocently sitting on top not letting her out. ‘Nothing to see here…move along!'”
Emily Hamburger, Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. “Posy is a four year old Maltese. Her best trick is giving kisses on command.”
Mattie Goostree, Pediatrics. “Ruby is a spunky 4-year-old bobtail cat, adopted from a shelter.”
Debbie Gardner, Pediatrics. “Kuma is a Pomeranian/poodle mix. She is crazy for car rides and she is her mom’s BFF.”
