Initial Rate Ranges for Titratable Infusions

Why: This will allow for clinical decision-making by the nurse caring for a patient at the bedside to initiate a titratable infusion at the most appropriate dose for a patient based on patient-specific factors.  This will also increase compliance with charted initial rates matching ordered rates.

Who: Providers and Nurses for VUMC Adult Areas.

What: The Joint Commission now allows for ranges in the ‘initial rate’ section of a titratable infusion order. VUMC adult inpatient areas are implementing initial rate ranges for a select number of titratable infusions.

When: June 7, 2023

Details:

  • When ordering certain “titration allowed” infusions, you can now designate a lower initial infusion dose range or customize your initial infusion dose range.
