Faculty candidates needed to lead School of Medicine’s Foundations of Health Equity II course

 The Office of Health Equity (OHE) is seeking an innovative educator experienced in health equity to be Course Director/Co-Director of Foundations of Health Equity – II (FHEII). This individual will be responsible for teaching and administering FHEII, a required course for medical students pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Health Equity. The overall goal of the course is to advance the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to health equity, and apply these to patients they have encountered in clinical settings. FHEII is a monthly evening session during which students (Immersion Phase, the 3rd and 4th years or Curriculum 2.0). The classes are discussion based facilitated by faculty.

The FHEII Course Director/Co-Director role requires approximately four hours of time monthly: ~1.5 hours – class session; ~1.5 hours – meeting/corresponding with students to plan the sessions; ~1 hour – administration (emails to class, posting in VSTAR, etc). Given the broad range of health equity topics, it is expected that at least two faculty members will serve as FHEII Course Director/Co-Director and share responsibilities.

FHEII Course Director/Co-Director Qualifications:

  • Vanderbilt University faculty member
  • MD/DO (or equivalent) or PhD in related field
  • Minimum of 3 years practice experience
  • Knowledge/expertise/scholarly work in health equity – broadly defined as improving the health of those most directly affected by structural inequities, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and other forms of exclusion and oppression
  • Experience teaching medical students is preferred but not required

Each FHEII Course Director/Co-Director will receive funds annually to support professional development.
