VUMC in the news: Sept. 5, 2023

New York Times columnist David French wrote an opinion piece, headlined “Three Generations Under One Roof,” that praises Irving Zamora, MD, MPH, assistant professor of Pediatric Surgery, for his care of French’s granddaughter Lila, who was born with several medical problems. The columnist refers to Zamora as a “brilliant doctor.”

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, continues to be one of the most in-demand sources about infectious disease in the news. Among the news outlets he has spoken to recently: The New York Times (A piece headlined “Is it Time to Wear a Mask Again?”), Huff Post, Bloomberg News, The Independent, WIRED, Health, and Yahoo! Life.

Stacey Dusetzina, PhD, professor of Health Policy, was quoted by several major news outlets in the wake of the announcement of which drugs would be subject to Medicare price negotiations. Among the outlets were The Wall Street Journal, NBC News, Vox, NPR (broadcast on “All Things Considered”) and Axios.

The Wall Street Journal reporter Brianna Abbott interviewed Tuya Pal, MD, associate director for Cancer Health Disparities, for a story about how the BRCA gene is also associated with pancreatic and prostate cancer, and that men can also be impacted.

Beth Malow, MD, MS, director of the Sleep Disorders Division, was interviewed for a Health story about how shift work may impair cognitive function.
