Save the date for the 22nd annual Levi Watkins, Jr. M.D. Lecture to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at noon. More information will be available soon. Nominations are being accepted now for the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., Awards.
Awards will be bestowed to at least one VUSM or VUMC faculty member, house staff member, graduate student, and medical student. Colleagues may nominate individuals who have made outstanding contributions in improving diversity, inclusion and equity to honor Dr. Watkins’ commitment to improving health care for all.
Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., was passionate about increasing opportunities for underrepresented minorities in medicine and the biomedical sciences. He became the first African American student to be admitted to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1966 and was the only African American student at Vanderbilt until he graduated in 1970. Dr. Watkins distinguished himself as a student, being selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and as a physician-scientist at Johns Hopkins Medicine. He embodied the attributes important in serving as a renowned role model for those who pursue careers in medicine and the biomedical sciences.
