Stephen W. Marshall, MBA, Senior Vice president of Operations for Surgery Partners, has been named as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Vanderbilt Health System’s Ambulatory Surgery Division.
In this role Marshall will report to Wendy Monaci, MBA, Executive Vice President for Adult Ambulatory Operations. In partnership with David Penson, MD, MPH, MMHC, the division’s Executive Medical Director, Marshall will be responsible for ambulatory surgery centers and procedure centers in the Vanderbilt Health System effective Jan. 1, 2024.
Within the Vanderbilt Health System approximately 91,000 surgical operations are performed each year, of which 70% are ambulatory. In response to year-over-year surgical volume growth, Vanderbilt Health announced creation of a new Ambulatory Surgery Division in August.
“Steve has a wealth of experience leading ambulatory surgery centers and a track record of optimizing efficiency and developing strategic growth plans. He is a great match for this new position,” said Monaci.
The division’s surgery centers currently include the Vanderbilt Surgery Center at Belle Meade, Vanderbilt Surgery Center at Franklin, The Vanderbilt Surgery Center located in the FEL building, Vanderbilt Surgery Center at Cool Springs, and Vanderbilt Surgery Center at Spring Hill.

At Surgery Partners, Marshall led an implementation team responsible for newly acquired ambulatory surgery centers and hospitals. There, he was also responsible for financial performance and facilities performance improvement. He also led the development of joint ventures and acquisitions.
Prior to his tenure at Surgery Partners, Marshall was with AMSURG for 13 years serving in a series of successively responsible roles culminating as division president and senior vice president for operations.
Marshall earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Milligan University and a Master of Business Administration from Tennessee Technological University. He is also a Certified Six sigma Greenbelt and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
