VUMC team turns out for Walk 4 PICS

The walk was attended by survivors, family members, friends, and a multi-disciplinary group of providers that included critical care physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, mental health professionals, and researchers.

Around 80 people showed up in the rain Saturday, Sept. 28 to the second annual Walk 4 PICS. This event, which is spearheaded by the team at VUMC’s Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, and Survivorship (CIBS) Center, was developed to raise awareness of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) while celebrating survivorship of critical illness.

The walk was attended by survivors, family members, friends, and a multi-disciplinary group of providers that included critical care physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, mental health professionals, and researchers.

There are roughly five million people admitted annually to U.S. Intensive Care Units and around 70 percent of these individuals survive. PICS – a collection of new or worsening impairments in the physical, cognitive, or mental health domain – is believed to impact at least 50 percent of survivors, sometimes for many years post-discharge.
