How VUMC prepares thousands of meals every day; ineffective cold medicines pulled from stores; five minutes of exercise lowers blood pressure; plus other news stories with VUMC sources

NBC News national reporter Linda Carroll interviewed Evan Brittain, MD, professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, for a story about a study showing that five minutes of exercise per day can lower blood pressure. Healthline reporter Gigen Mammoser also interviewed Brittain for a story about a new study that found that even “moderate” amounts of exercise had a significant impact on lowering the risk of atrial fibrillation.

Reporter Nikki Hauserfrom WTVF News Channel 5 interviewed Buddy Creech, MD, MPH, professor of Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases and Edie Carell Johnson Chair in Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, about whooping cough and walking pneumonia. The whooping cough story was also picked up by WGNS Radio.

HealthDay reporter Elana Gotkine covered the JAMA study from Bill Heerman, MD, MPH, chief of the Division of Pediatrics, that found a health literacy-informed digital intervention reduces the incidence of obesity at 24 months of age.

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, was quoted by reporters at, among other national and local outlets, WSMV Channel 4 News (ineffective cold medicines to be pulled from the market); Yahoo! News (debunking myths about the common cold); and Verywell Health (Listeria contamination in foods).

The Nashville Scene published a story, “The Biggest Hidden Restaurants in Nashville,” a piece focusing on food operations that serve large quantities and how they conduct such successful operations on such large scales. Walt McClure, MBA, director of Food and Nutrition Services, and Calvin Spencer, a VUMC chef, were interviewed for the story.

United Press International reporter Susan Kreimer interviewed Eva Parker, MD,  assistant professor of Dermatology, for a story about a new study showing air pollution exposure is associated with eczema.

Reporter Andy Cordan from  WKRN News 2 interviewed Jamie Horton, mother of patient Hayden Horton, who is currently hospitalized at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt after being assaulted on a school bus in Clarksville. Reporter Steve Mehling from WSMV Channel 4 News also covered the story.

Medscape editor Marilynn Larkin interviewed Shichun Bao, MD, PhD, professor of Medicine at the Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Clinic, for a story about the benefits vs risks of people without known diabetes/prediabetes regularly using a continuous glucose monitoring device.
