Eunice Huang, MD, MS, associate surgeon-in-chief at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has been appointed to the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Council. Her term begins July 1.

The ABS, an independent, nonprofit organization established in 1937, promotes excellence in surgical education and certification and is the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists.

Its council, which consists of about 35 ABS-certified surgeons, sets national standards for surgical education, assessment, certification and research priorities. Additionally, it addresses key issues affecting surgeons across ABS specialty areas, ensuring that medical specialty boards can implement discipline-specific strategies to advance the profession.

“I have tremendous respect for the vital work of the American Board of Surgery in serving the public by ensuring that certified surgeons in North America meet the highest standards of excellence,” said Huang, professor of Pediatric Surgery, vice chair for Surgical Quality and Patient Safety for the Section of Surgical Sciences, and executive vice chair for Pediatric Surgery at Monroe Carell.

“I am passionate about creating strong, dynamic learning environments for trainees and practicing surgeons. I am humbled and excited for the opportunity to contribute to the ABS and help advance best practices in surgical training and certification.”

A national leader in surgical quality, outcomes research and education, Huang leads the Pediatric Surgery Research Collaborative, a multi-institutional research network that has shaped clinical practice through National Institutes of Health-funded studies. She also serves as an examiner for the American Board of Surgery and chaired the Education Committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association.

“Dr. Huang is a national treasure and at the forefront of graduate medical education and coaching,” said Jeff Upperman, MD, surgeon-in-chief of Monroe Carell and chair of the Department of Pediatric Surgery. “Her leadership is shaping the future of surgical education and quality improvement. We are fortunate to have her on our team.”
