The large lithium-ion batteries in devices such as hoverboards, e-bikes and e-scooters can cause fires that burn very hot and fast, and those devices are not allowed in VUMC buildings. However, laptop computers and cell phones, which contain lithium batteries, are approved devices.

VUMC Policy: Power-driven mobility assistive equipment

This policy allows people with mobility impairment to use motorized wheelchairs and powered mobility scooters. However, it does not allow the use, storage, or charging of other motorized devices such as hoverboards, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

If you bring one to work, park it outside. You can secure your device to a bike rack at various locations on campus.

Battery Fires

Lithium-ion battery fires may be caused by physical damage or existing problems inside the battery.

The battery can be damaged by:

· bumps, drops, vibrations, or water.

· leaving the device plugged in long after it has fully charged.

· charging after repeatedly letting the battery charge drop too low.

· an external short circuit.

· extreme high or low temperatures.

Reduce the risk of fire in your mobility devices

· Regularly check your device and the battery for damage.

· Only use batteries that are approved by the device manufacturer.
