Joseph Schlesinger, M.D., a clinical fellow in the Division of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine, received third place in the clinical medicine poster category at the recent American Medical Association Research Symposium.
His research was titled, “Effects of multisensory training on pitch perception of a pulse oximeter.” Schlesinger partnered with the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, the Department of Psychology and the Vanderbilt Brain Institute to examine ways to improve an anesthesiologist’s ability to recognize and respond to auditory and visual cues in the operating room.
More than 600 abstracts were submitted for consideration this year, the most in the symposium’s 10-year history. The award program was begun to complement leadership opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows who are interested in research.
Schlesinger plans to continue researching ways to improve audiovisual vigilance of anesthesiologists, and he hopes to develop a training component based on his research that can become part of residents’ training.
