Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, kicked off the Spring Faculty Meeting by providing a short update of VUSM’s academic endeavors.
The School of Medicine’s progress can be measured in numbers:
- 75% of the medical school’s graduating class of 2019 matched into the top 25 ranked residency programs in the country;
- 17.3% of incoming residents this year are underrepresented minorities;
- About 12% of VUMC’s incoming first-year interns graduated from VUSM, fewer than in previous years due to an uptick in residents coming to VUMC from outside the Southeast.
- VUSM received 5,982 applications for 96 first-year spots the 2019 incoming class;
- VUSM claims 134 AAAS members as of 2018, compared to 32 in 2008.
The awards portion of the meeting was hosted by John Penn, PhD, associate dean of Faculty Affairs.
