On December 1st, 2023, VUSM and VUMC celebrated the 15th Annual Health Professionals Education Research Day (HPERD). Since 2009, this event has been held each year to showcase education research in the health professions ongoing in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center community. Supported by the Office of Health Sciences Education and the Office for Continuous Professional Development and organized through the Educator Development Program the goal of HPERD is to provide an opportunity for all members of the education community to display their progress and success in health professions education innovation.
The poster session displayed research from 26 projects representing a range of topics from curriculum design to assessing learners in both the School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Feedback was provided on all abstracts submitted and expert peer review judging was held for all the submitters requesting review for the Blue-Ribbon Award. Educator judges volunteered from the Academy of Excellence in Education and varied across departments from internal medicine to anesthesiology to radiology to pediatrics.
This year’s blue-ribbon winner was Andrew Hughes, MD and his mentor Lisa Mendes, MD for their project, “An ECG Curriculum for Internal Medicine Interns: A Hybrid Approach to Improve Management of Arrhythmias” -Andrew Hughes, MD, Joseph Quintana, MD and Lisa Mendes, MD.
Two honorable mentions were also recognized.
- “Advocacy for Obstetric Patients with Limited English Proficiency: A Video-Based Curriculum for Trainees” submitted by Dominique Mosley, BS, Carolina Gomez Grimaldi, MD, Amita Bey, EdD, T Hope Collins, MPA, Eleazar Jimenez, CMI, Yanelis Diaz, BA, and Etoi Garrison, MD;
