Rodgers named latest CANDLE award recipient
Dr. Scott M. Rodgers, a child and adolescent psychiatrist who serves as the third-year psychiatry course director and coordinates the fourth-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry elective has been chosen as this month’s recipient of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Candle (Caring, Advocating, Nurturing, Determination, Leadership, and Empathy) Award, a monthly award given by Vanderbilt medical students to individuals who have devoted themselves to teaching and mentoring.
Recipients of the award are nominated and chosen based upon their positive impact on the lives of physicians-in-training, and are recognized by their students as examples of excellence in medical education.
"Dr. Rodgers is an excellent, well-educated, personable psychiatrist who makes an amazing impact on the lives of his patients,” said a medical student who nominated Rodgers for the award. “He truly cares about each one of his patients in his child and adolescent psychiatry clinic -– he listens attentively to their stories and remembers important details about their lives. He knows the right questions to ask both children and their parents, and empowers them through helpful advice and encouragement to make changes in their lives. Dr. Rodgers is well-practiced in both the science and art of psychiatry; and knows how to apply the latest research and therapy techniques in delicate clinical situations.”
Rodgers also has time for teaching and mentoring medical students.
“He takes time to teach students in clinic and on the wards. He is passionate about his field, and his energy and enthusiasm can be contagious,” the nominating student said. “This year nearly a dozen fourth year medical students are considering a career in psychiatry, and each one of us can tell you how Dr. Rodgers has been instrumental and influential in helping us to make this decision.”
