Dr. Mildred Stahlman’s remarkable life; how the overturn of Roe v. Wade has affected Black women; will you live longer if you are a nice person? and other news stories with VUMC sources

The death of Dr. Mildred Stahlman at the age of 101 garnered obituaries about her remarkable life at both local and national news outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Becker’s Hospital Review, The Tennessean and WTVF News Channel 5. WTVF did a second story, a feature on VUMC neonatal nurse Martha Lott, RN, who was saved as a baby by Dr. Stahlman’s innovative treatment. Finally, Vanderbilt graduate Willie Geist narrated a tribute to Dr. Stahlman that aired Sunday, July 7, on NBC News’ “Today” show. The 40th anniversary of VUMC’s LifeFlight helicopter program was covered by The Tennessean, with quotes from John Morris, MD, associate chief of staff of the Vanderbilt Health System and former chief of the Division of Trauma; Jeanne Yeatman, RN, MBA, chief nursing officer at Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital and former program director at LifeFlight, and Ashley Panas, MD, assistant professor of Emergency Medicine.

PBS NewsHour producer Layla Quran quoted Rolanda Lister, MD, in a story about how Roe v. Wade being overturned has affected black women.

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, has given numerous interviews recently about the summer surge in COVID cases. Among the outlets: CBS News, Health, Prevention, Verywell Health, WPLN Nashville Public Radio and Healio.

Keipp Talbot, MD, associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, was quoted by The New York Times in a story about the CDC’s recommendation that Americans receive a new COVID vaccine this fall.

Ben Ho Park, MD, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, was quoted by NBC News in a story about the cancer diagnosis of Ann Wilson, lead singer of the band Heart. The band has postponed its upcoming tour.

Seth Karp, MD, professor and chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences and former director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center, was quoted in a Chicago Tribune piece about an error in the new lung transplant algorithm and the harm it did to patients.

Axios senior policy reporter Caitlin Owens interviewed Matthew Schrag, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Neurology, for a story about diverging on how widely anti-amyloid therapies should be used.
