Losses

Herbert Burke Jr., M.D., ‘55, BA ‘52, HS ‘58, FE ‘59, died July 7, 2014. He was 86. Dr. Burke is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Herbert and Floyd; and one grandchild.

 

Frank Cadenhead, M.D., ‘45, died Oct. 17, 2014. He was 90. Dr. Cadenhead is survived by his wife, Billie; children, Diann, Wayne, J.F., and Helen Mary; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

 

Henry Callaway Jr., M.D., ‘54, HS ‘55, died Aug. 14, 2014. He was 88. Dr. Callaway is survived by his wife, Martha; children, Henry, Thomas, Hadley and Ed; and nine grandchildren.

 

James Clifton, M.D., ‘47, BA ‘44, died Aug. 22, 2014. He was 90. Dr. Clifton is survived by his wife, Kathy; children, Katie and Carrie; and four grandchildren.

 

Steward Hillis, M.D., FE ‘77, died July 21, 2014. He was 70. Dr. Hillis is survived by his wife, Anne; children, Andrew, Ally, Iain and Sara; and 10 grandchildren.

 

Joseph Hurt, M.D., BA ‘49, FAC ‘77, died Oct. 21, 2014. He was 89. Dr. Hurt is survived by his wife, Gay; children Jayne and Randy; and two grandchildren.

 

Robert Johnston, M.D., ‘66, HS ‘73, died Oct. 11, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Martha; children James, Andrew, Elizabeth, David and Mary; and 11 grandchildren.

 

Mark Judge, M.D., ‘62, died Oct. 28, 2014. He was 78. Dr. Judge is survived by his children, Marcia, Mark, David and Daniel; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 

Mark Lipman, M.D., ‘83, died Oct. 20, 2014. He was 57. Dr. Lipman is survived by his wife, Michele; and children, Mathew and Malorie.

 

Harriett Livingston, M.D., HS ‘51, died Aug. 12, 2014. She was 78. Dr. Livingston is survived by her children, Barbara, Marian and Tom; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

John B. Lynch, M.D., professor of Plastic Surgery, emeritus, who was former chair of Plastic Surgery and the first director of the Vanderbilt Burn Center when it opened in 1983, died Oct. 20, 2014. He was 85.

Dr. Lynch, known as “J.B.” by friends and colleagues, had been a member of the Vanderbilt faculty since 1973.

In addition to his role in Plastic Surgery and the Burn Center, Dr. Lynch also was chief of Head and Neck Services in the Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals.

During his career Dr. Lynch was recognized as a national leader in medicine and plastic surgery, and, among other honors, was president of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, president of the Southern Medical Association, and director and chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

He was also named Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1987, and in 1991 he was awarded an Honorary Citation of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, given in recognition of his part in the development of the specialty of Plastic Surgery and his outstanding scientific contributions to its advancement.

Dr. Lynch is survived by his wife, Mary Joyce Lynch; a son, John B. Lynch Jr.; a daughter, Margaret Callihan; a stepdaughter, Jennye Greene; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His first wife, Jean Crane Lynch, preceded him in death.

 

Ernest McCoy, M.D., FAC ‘61, died Sept. 28, 2014. He was 91. Dr. McCoy is survived by his wife, Anne; children, Neil, Carey and Maureen; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John (Stan) Miller, M.D., ‘60, died July 19, 2014. He was 78. Dr. Miller is survived by his wife, Lois; children, Anne, Mark, Lyle, Marty and Dana; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Donald Mode, M.D., HS ‘70, died Oct. 13, 2014. He was 80. Dr. Mode is survived by his wife, Tia Teresa; children, Steven, Kevin, Michael, Richard, Matt, Ian, Donna, Kathleen and Bonnie; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 

Ronald Orrell, M.D., HS ‘84, died July 17, 2014. He was 72. Dr. Orrell is survived by his wife, Anne; children Anne Elizabeth, Ronald and Jaye; and nine grandchildren.

 

John Owsley, M.D., ‘53, died Nov. 3, 2014. He was 86. Dr. Owsley is survived by his wife, Sharon; children, Sara and Jake; and nine grandchildren.

 

Doris Pipkin, M.D., ‘51, HS ‘52, died Oct. 27, 2014. She was 90. Dr. Pipkin was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Pipkin, M.D., and is survived by her children, Ben, Steve, Will, John and Neal; and seven grandchildren.

 

James Pitcock, M.D., HS ‘56, died Aug. 19, 2014. He was 84. Dr. Pitcock is survived by his wife, Cynthia; children, Allison and James; and four grandchildren.

 

Robert Spohr, M.D., ‘75, died June 15, 2014. He was 65. Dr. Spohr is survived by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Heather; and one grandchild.

 

William Sutter, M.D., ‘90, HS ‘94, FE ‘95, died Sept. 11, 2014. He was 50. Dr. Sutter is survived by his wife, Edith; and children, Megan and Tate.

 

Louis Underwood, M.D., ‘61, HS ‘65, died July 21, 2014. He was 77. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Lee, Beth, Ruth, Krystyna and Margaret; and 11 grandchildren.

 

Russell Ward, M.D., ‘44, BA ‘42, HS ‘54, died Sept. 19, 2014. He is survived by his children, Karen, Russell and Michael; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Philip Williams, M.D., BA ‘54, HS ‘63, died June 17, 2014. He was 81. Dr. Williams is survived by his wife, Marsha; children Cameron, Jeffrey, Valerie, Jonathan, Dan and Kristi; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Steven Wolff, M.D., HS ‘77, FAC ‘01, died Oct. 31, 2014. He was 65. Dr. Wolff is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Joshua and Jennie; and two grandchildren.

 

Col. John Wright Jr., M.D., died Feb. 24, 2013. He was 81. He is survived by his wife, Johanna; and his son Stephen.
