The first-ever Vanderbilt Giving Day, planned for April 21, will be a 24-hour campaign that draws alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and fans together to advance the mission of the university.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center nephrologist and Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. William Fissell IV is making major progress on a first-of-its kind device to free kidney patients from dialysis. He is building an artificial implantable kidney with microchip filters and living kidney cells that will be powered by a patient’s own heart.

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine recently held the first in a series of six regional conferences on innovations in graduate medical education (GME) sponsored by a $50,000 grant from the Macy Foundation.

André Churchwell, professor of medicine, biomedical engineering and radiology and radiological sciences and senior associate dean for diversity affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, was recently named to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.

Fourteen outstanding faculty members from across the university have been named to the 2016 class of Chancellor Faculty Fellows. The class comprises highly accomplished, recently tenured faculty from the humanities, social sciences, life and physical sciences, and clinical sciences, as well as business, education and engineering.

John Gore, director of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Fellowship is granted to “academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on society.”
