The Office of Research is accepting applications for the 2006 VUMC Discovery Grant program.
Discovery Grants are designed to stimulate the development of new research ideas and are not intended as a source of bridge funding.
Applications will be evaluated on scientific merit and on the likelihood that a project, if further developed, will be competitive for individual research project funding (R01).
As part of the application, the Office of Research is requesting information about what federally funded award the applicant plans to pursue using data and results from his or her Discovery Grant.
This year the Office of Research is soliciting Discovery Grant applications for two types of awards:
• Awards up to $50,000 per year for one or two years to support pre-R01-type research, for a total grant of $100,000;
• Special Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) awards up to $50,000 per year for one or two years (for a total grant of $100,000) to fund research on complementary and alternative medicine.
Applications for CAM awards must focus on some aspect of complementary and alternative medicine — an approach to care that incorporates nonconventional methods with conventional methods.
CAM interventions/therapies usually are grouped in five categories, including mind-body medicine (yoga, mindfulness-based stress reduction), alternative medical systems (Chinese medicine, naturopathy), energy medicine (magnet therapy, qi gong), biologicals (herbals, supplements, topicals) and manipulative therapy (acupuncture, massage therapy).
Completed Discovery Grant applications are due to the Office of Research by 5 p.m. on March 17, with grant funding to begin July 1. Information and forms may be obtained on the Office of Research Web page at: https://medschool.mc.vanderbilt.edu/oor/pd/index.php?PD=4.
