Emergency Medicine lecture to honor Joseph Ross, M.D.
A leader whose legacy at Vanderbilt includes helping to establish an
Emergency Medicine department as well as Vanderbilt's LifeFlight air ambulance program continues to touch the lives of up-and-coming physicians through the establishment of the Joseph C. Ross, M.D., Lectureship.
Ross, associate vice chancellor for Health Affairs, Emeritus, received his medical degree from Vanderbilt in 1954. He returned to help lead VUMC for some 20 years, and among many of his accomplishments included establishing full-time faculty in Emergency Medicine.
“We had no full time faculty in Emergency Medicine and I made the Emergency Medicine program one of my priorities,” Ross said. “I also helped establish the LifeFlight Helicopter program along with Dr. John Morris. I remember going to Dr. Robinson (former Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Roscoe R. Robinson, M.D.) and explaining that we just had to do something. He gave me the go ahead to do it.”
Those priorities included bringing in Corey Slovis, M.D., who was appointed professor and chair of Emergency Medicine in 1992. Slovis is only the second chair of Emergency Medicine.
“Dr. Ross helped increase faculty and funding for the Emergency Medicine department and it was under his leadership that the residency program became one of the premier programs in the country,” said Slovis.
The Inaugural Joseph C. Ross, M.D. Lectureship will be held Monday, April 25 from noon to 1 p.m. in 206 Preston Research Building. W. Brian Gibler, M.D., will speak on “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Coronary Syndromes in the ED: The CRUSADE Quality Improvement Initiative.”
Gibler, a former faculty member who received his medical degree from VUSM, is chairman of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; director, Center for Emergency Care, University of Cincinnati Hospital; president and CEO, Vanguard Medical; and medical director of the Emergency Medicine Service Line for The Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati.
The Ross Lectureship is the first endowed lectureship in Emergency Medicine and was established by Ross, his family and other supporters.
“The Joseph C. Ross, M.D. Lectureship is a fitting example of how this great physician and leader continues to touch the lives of those involved in emergency medicine,” Slovis said. “We are grateful to him and his continued stewardship in emergency medicine.”
