Epigenetics expert Feinberg set for next Discovery Lecture
Andrew Feinberg, M.D., MPH, professor of Medicine, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Oncology at John Hopkins University School of Medicine, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Dec. 15.
His talk, “The Epigenetic Basis of Common Human Disease,” will begin at 4 p.m., in 208 Light Hall.
Feinberg’s lab investigates the involvement of epigenetic changes — heritable changes in gene expression (but not the underlying DNA sequence) — in common diseases including cancer, autism and psychiatric illness.
His group’s discovery of specific epigenetic alterations and common variants in cancer has led to a large study on the introduction of epigenetic testing for cancer risk in the general medical setting. In addition, his work on epigenetic mechanisms in Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome, a cancer-predisposing condition, revealed a link to in vitro fertilization technology.
Feinberg is a member of the Institute of Medicine.
The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics. For a complete schedule of the Discovery Lecture series and archived video of previous lectures, go to www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/discoveryseries.
