Eye Institute symposium to focus on neurodegenerative glaucoma research

Vanderbilt Eye Institute's Neurodegeneration in Glaucoma symposium, “From Mechanisms to New Treatments,” will be held Oct. 14-15 at the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt.

The symposium's keynote address, “Plasticity of the Somatosensory System after Spinal Cord Injury,” will be given by Jon Kaas, Ph.D., Distinguished Centennial Professor of Psychology at Vanderbilt.

“Through the symposium we'd like to achieve two main things. First, we'd like to see a synthesis of the most important components in the mechanisms of how the optic nerve degenerates in the disease,” said David Calkins, Ph.D., associate professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Psychology at VEI and the Vanderbilt Brain Institute.

“Second, we hope to reach a general agreement on those components with the most promise as targets for therapeutic intervention via new drug discovery and development.”

More than 100 basic, translational and clinical scientists are expected to attend.
