Get ready to run at Relay for Life

This year's Relay for Life of East Nashville event will give participants the chance to spend the night at LP Field on the banks of the Cumberland River.

This signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society will be held from 6 p.m., Friday, May 1, to 6 a.m., Saturday, May 2.

During this overnight event, teams of walkers and runners keep moving in a relay to raise money for cancer research and support. Cancer survivors, families and friends are invited to celebrate their lives and the lives of those who are battling cancer. To honor those who have been lost to the disease, there will be a moving ceremony featuring luminaria to brighten the night sky.

Vanderbilt is a sponsor for the 2009 Relay for Life and is forming teams for this year's event.

Teams consist of eight to 15 walkers. Each walker is encouraged to raise approximately $100, with a team goal of $1,000.

“Cancer never sleeps and this is a night when we stay awake as a measure of our commitment to fighting this disease,” said Jill Forbert, marketing coordinator for the Department of Marketing Outreach and Promotions.

Hardaway Construction Corp. has created an online silent auction, with all profits going to the American Cancer Society. For more information and a map, visit www.relayforlife.org/eastnashville.
