Humphreys named Children’s Hospital pharmacy director
Elizabeth Humphreys, Pharm.D., has been named the director of Pharmacy at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Humphreys, who joined the Children’s Hospital pharmacy staff in 2007, has served as the interim director since February.
As director, Humphreys said she will work with the pharmacy team to ensure the delivery of safe and effective drug therapy for pediatric patients. In conjunction with the pharmacy team, she will review medication use and implement new pharmacy practices while overseeing the pharmacy programs and services for both the inpatient and outpatient pharmacies.
In recent months, Humphreys has led a review of pharmacy waste. For one week, the pharmacy collected and evaluated medications that were prepared and delivered but were returned unused, and for the most part, discarded. The pharmacy will study how a change in process over the next two months will impact the amount of wasted medication, as well as the savings in drug and labor costs.
“It is an exciting project that we anticipate could realize a significant savings for the hospital,” Humphreys said.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt, she spent a decade in Memphis specializing in the pediatric population while working in the pharmacies of Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.
