Huntoon named chief of Division of Pain Medicine
Huntoon will lead multidisciplinary pain management efforts, including oversight of the Vanderbilt Interventional Pain Center at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks, as well as the Adult Acute Pain Service, which provides pain management for post-operative patients.
“Marc is one of our nation’s most innovative and respected physician scientists in the field of pain management, and we are excited to have him join our leadership,” said Warren Sandberg, M.D., Ph.D., chair of Anesthesiology.
“His extensive experience in pain medicine, as well as his involvement in national initiatives dedicated to advancing pain management research and improving interventional pain modalities, will bring a new level of care to our patients.
“Marc’s addition will also further enhance VUMC’s multidisciplinary approach to the interventional management of both chronic and acute pain,” Sandberg said.
Huntoon has extensive prior experience developing and leading comprehensive pain programs in academic medical centers, and comes to Vanderbilt from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he served as chair of the Division of Pain Medicine beginning in 2001.
Huntoon stepped down as chair in 2008 to focus on research in novel spinal biologic therapies and peripheral neuromodulation.
He has also developed prototypes for three pain-relieving devices that are patent pending.
Huntoon received his medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Anesthesiology at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and a residency in Obstetric Anesthesia at Wake Forest University.
He became the first pain fellow to train in the Navy, from 1991-1992.
After leaving military service, Huntoon joined the Medical College of Ohio (University of Toledo) as chair of its Pain Medicine Division from 1993-1997, and served as associate professor and chair of Anesthesiology from 1997-2001.
Nationally, Huntoon served as chair of the Education Committee and on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine from 2006-2011.
He is an editor for the journals Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and Pain Physician, and is deputy editor-in-chief for Pain Practice.
