The School of Medicine on Monday, Sept. 21, will open the doors for the second year of its "Mini Medical School," an innovative program designed to teach major principles of medicine to non-medical people.
Every Monday night for the next eight weeks, faculty members will shed some light on the theories and techniques behind the diagnosis and treatment of many common disease. No medical or scientific background is necessary. The fee for the entire course is $100; $80 for Vanderbilt employees. For more information, call 343-2585.
The School of Nursing and the Vanderbilt Cancer Center are sponsoring the Oncology Nurse Practitioner Symposium Sept. 25-27 at Nashville's Regal Maxwell House Hotel.
The symposium will provide a forum for discussing the delivery of oncology nursing care and issues surrounding advanced practice in today's health care environment. The theme of this symposium is Practical Applications to Practice.
The Fall Faculty Meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in Langford Auditorium.
At the meeting, institution leadership will discuss various aspects of the medical center's recent performance. All faculty members are expected to attend.
Vanderbilt Children's Hospital Asthma Center will offer a free workshop for children with asthma and their parents from 8:30 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 19, at Edgehill United Methodist Church, 1502 Edgehill Ave.
Topics to be covered include medications, environmental triggers, sports participation, parents' smoking cessation, and school-related issues.
Other sponsors include VCH's Family Resource Center, Cumberland Pediatric Foundation, and the American Lung Association.
The VCH Asthma Center is also sponsoring a pediatric grand rounds and a series of conferences for residents on asthma-related topics.
At the grand rounds, Dr. Peyton Eggleston, professor of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, will discuss new asthma medications at 8 a.m., Tuesday Sept. 22 in 208 Light Hall.
The resident conferences will be at noon, Tuesday-Friday, Sept. 22-25.
