Noted thoracic surgeon joins faculty
Jonathan Nesbitt, M.D., an experienced Nashville cardiothoracic surgeon, has joined the Vanderbilt faculty as associate professor of Thoracic Surgery.
“We are pleased to welcome Jon to our growing team of talented surgeons,” said Joe B. (Bill) Putnam Jr., M.D., chair of the Department of Thoracic Surgery. “His extensive experience, technical skill and leadership ability will add to the depth and breadth of our expertise.”
Nesbitt comes to Vanderbilt from Saint Thomas Hospital, where he led its Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
“I greatly appreciate the opportunity to join the Vanderbilt faculty and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center,” said Nesbitt. “I am looking forward to working with some of the finest clinicians and researchers in this country. The opportunity for me is unique and one that affords specific synergies that I firmly believe will enhance the care of patients in our region with benign and malignant diseases of the chest.”
Nesbitt received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his postgraduate general surgery training at Vanderbilt in 1987 and his cardiothoracic training at Albany Medical Center in New York in 1989.
After completing his residency training, Nesbitt spent three years of active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and served on the U.S.H.S. Comfort during Operation Desert Storm. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he joined M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he was an associate professor of Thoracic Surgery and director of Clinical Education and Training Programs for the Department of Thoracic and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He has written or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and a textbook.
