Southern Medical Association honors Stover for leadership
Daniel Stover, M.D., chief resident in Internal Medicine, is the recipient of this year’s Holt Young Physician Leadership Award from the Southern Medical Association (SMA).
The Holt Award recognizes a senior or chief resident who has exhibited excellent leadership traits early in their career and shows the promise of a future career of outstanding leadership in health care.
Stover, who graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2008, says the award is an honor and helps build the confidence to pursue his goal to one day be a leader in Oncology, and he adds the opportunities and mentorship he has received at Vanderbilt have opened many doors for him.
“I have had the opportunity to work alongside talented residents and faculty and to serve on committees such as the House Staff Advisory Council and the Graduate Medical Education Committee. All of these things have helped me grow as a physician and leader,” Stover said.
Stover has left an impression on his mentors at Vanderbilt as well.
“Dan is the complete package — he is one of the best teachers we’ve ever had on our house staff, he is an outstanding clinician, and he is a very effective leader. Combine that with a strong background in science, especially as it applies to cancer, and he has as bright a future as any resident I’ve ever seen. It is a joy to watch him in action,” said John Sergent, M.D., professor of Medicine and vice chair for Education in the Department of Medicine.
Stover received the Holt award at SMA's annual meeting awards luncheon on Nov. 4 in Williamsburg, Va.
In July 2012, he begins an oncology fellowship at the Massachusetts General/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute program.
