Talbot to advise UHC consortium on blood infections
Vanderbilt's Tom Talbot, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of Medicine and chief hospital epidemiologist, and Peter Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins University, have been appointed to advise the University HealthSystems Consortium (UHC) Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection (CRBSI) Commit to Action Collaborative.
Hospital-acquired CRBS infections account for somewhere between 14,000 and 28,000 deaths annually in the United States.
“This will be the third time I have worked on a UHC CRBSI prevention project, and it always is an honor to collaborate with an organization with such a strong focus on quality improvement,” Talbot said.
“We've been very active in efforts to reduce CRBSI at VUMC, which can be especially challenging in a large medical center such as ours. The UHC collaborative allows us to share our expertise and operational strategies in an area we've focused on. The prevention practices seem rather simple, but implementation, particularly in large centers, is a challenge.”
Over the summer, as the participating hospitals undertake to improve CRBSI prevention, they'll share their results and information about the most effective strategies.
